Talent

Our Place to Grow & Share

“More talent in my motherfuckin’ left thumb.
She ain’t a Nicki fan?
Then the bitch deaf dumb.”

Good morning. Y’all sick of me yet? I laughed when I typed that, but I do know that’s inevitable. Too much of a good thing is still too much. This is the 18th email of our second 30-day journey together. Like the first, the destination is unknown to me. But as the African proverb says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” So here we are.

Exactly one week out from the New Black release and secret pop up shop, I gotta warn you that these emails gonna be cocky as fuck. Wait, I guess they always are. Good. There’s enough in this world and in this life trying to tear us down. Here, I’m gonna build you up.

I had an interesting conversation today. Text fingers voiced an opinion that I suppose was supposed to subdue me. It did not.  My talent is undeniable. A blind man can see it. True story. (Y’all remember that massage I got last week? The place is called Blind Touch ’cause all of the masseurs are literally blind. And yup, the blind nigga was feeling me too.) Your talent is just as bright.

You gotta know like you know that you know. Because as artists, we are constantly critiqued. And yes, you are an artist too. No matter how you make your money or what title you claim, you create what no one else can.

P.S. Today’s opening quote comes from Nicki Minaj. She has taught me that it is okay for a woman to be as cocky as a dude. To not shrink to make others feel tall.
P.P.S. Okay, time for our daily task! Choose five imaginary mentors from among the living and dead. Y’all already know Nipsey and Maya Angelou are my top two. Scratch that, Jesus is number one. Then Nip, Queen Maya, Alicia Keys and…I’ma go with Beyonce ’cause I just watched Homecoming for the 50th time, but really I wanna say Jay. Wait, they’re married so together they count as one 🙂
